Dr Karim Gariani is an Associate Senior Physician and Head of the Diabetology Unit within the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetology, Nutrition and Patient Therapeutic Education at the HUG. A FMH-certified specialist in endocrinology-diabetology and internal medicine, he combines extensive clinical practice with active engagement in translational research.
Trained in Geneva, he earned a PhD at EPFL for his work on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. He then completed his speciality training in endocrinology and diabetology in London before returning to the HUG to lead clinical and scientific projects focused on diabetes complications and innovative therapeutic approaches in metabolic liver diseases.
As Co-Chair of the Centre, he helps define strategic directions related to the clinical management of diabetes and strengthens the links between basic research and patient care. His medical expertise, teaching role, and involvement in collaborative projects enhance the Centre’s clinical and academic impact.
