"The Geneva Centre for Inflammation Research makes it possible to pool resources, fostering multidisciplinary collaborations and to attract young talent; it will also offer state-of-the-art training, and will work towards a rapid translation of research into diagnostic tools and treatments."
Cem Gabay, Dean, UNIGE Faculty of Medicine
Inflammation lies at the heart of many critical reactions of the immune system. It helps the immune system fight off infectious agents such as viruses and bacteria but it can also wreak havoc to the body´s own cells when it goes awry. The right balance between the mechanisms driving the beneficial effect of inflammation while minimizing effects against self are thus critical for human health.
The University of Geneva (UNIGE) Faculty of Medicine has a long-standing interest in understanding the molecular basis of inflammatory processes in health and disease. To put this significant expertise under one umbrella, the Geneva Centre for Inflammation Research (GCIR) has been created. It allows the scientific partnership between the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) and the UNIGE Faculty of Medicine to create better experimental treatments and bring them to the clinic. The interdisciplinary approach of the Centre, which is composed of experts in the various areas of inflammation research, provides an ideal environment for advances in biomedical knowledge. Our goal is to ultimately improve patient care.
