Putting new research on fat burning into perspective
Dr. Angela M. Ramos-Lobo and Prof. Pierre Maechler from the Department of Cell Physiology and Metabolism publish a Perspective article in Science that brings together landmark findings on what may limit fat burning at the molecular level, reported in three recent scientific papers.
The article synthesizes the contributions of this triumvirate of breakthrough uncovering the role of a mitochondrial transport protein involved in carnitine synthesis when fat consumption is prompted. It also offers a clear framework for an area of research that is evolving rapidly and helps place these recent discoveries in a broader biological and clinical context. In particular, it provides insights into why individual responses to GLP-1-based treatments for obesity vary.
