A golfer-runner takes action for mental health
Mark Cobley, professional golfer and experienced runner, is supporting neuroscience research by participating in the Course de l’Escalade. His idea: to raise funds for the Synapsy Centre by inviting people to bet on his race time.
At 61 years old, former professional golfer Mark Cobley, well-versed in tackling sporting challenges, is gearing up for his 29th participation in Geneva’s renowned Course de l’Escalade. But this year, he runs with a special motivation: to support neuroscience research conducted by the Synapsy Centre."I chose to support mental health research because a close friend of mine is going through a very difficult period," Mark shares. "A friend recommended Synapsy to me, and I was convinced of the importance of the work being carried out there."
Originally from England, Mark began his professional golfing career at the age of 18 before settling in France. Since 1989, following the death of a loved one from leukaemia, he has channelled his sporting energy into charitable causes. Each year, he combines his passion for sport and solidarity with an innovative initiative: inviting his friends, family, and members of the Bossey Golf Club to bet on his time to complete a race. Thanks to his determination, Mark manages to engage 80 to 100 participants annually.
The rules are simple: each bet is set at 30 CHF, and the winner gets to enjoy a day of golf with Mark. All the funds raised will be donated in full to the Synapsy Centre. "In England, we bet on just about anything that moves. It’s a fun and friendly way to get as many people involved as possible in a great cause. This year, I’m 7 kg lighter, and with my four to five training sessions a week, I’m ready to take on the 7.2 km challenge of the Course de l’Escalade!" he says enthusiastically.
