2. Preparing the agreement
Depending on the type of your research projects, follow here the adapted procedure. In case of doubt, feel free to contact or make an appointment with the academic advisor of the School of chemistry and biochemistry.
Types of research projects
Depending on where the research projects (practical training in research and master thesis) are done, the inscription procedure differs. There is 4 types:
- Intra-muros master practical training/thesis
The practical training/thesis is done within a research laboratory of the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
- Extra-muros UNIGE master practical training/thesis
The practical training/thesis is done in a research laboratory of the University of Geneva but not part of the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Exemples: Faculty of medicine, CMU, Section of Biology, Section of Pharmacie.
- Extra-muros academic practical training/thesis
The practical training/thesis is done in a research laboratory of a university, outsite of the University of Geneva
Exemples: EPFL, EMPA, ETHZ, CNRS.
- Extra-muros industrial practical training/thesis
The extra-muros master practical training/thesis is done in a private company. Note that the project must have an academic value and lead to original research. Technician-level projects are not authorised.
Exemples: DSM-Firmenich, Roche, Epithelix.
This is procedure to register intra-muros practical training/thesis, ie. practical training/thesis within a lab of the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
First, contact the research group in which you are interested to do your internship/thesis.
Once you have discussed the project and obtain an oral agreement you can start filling the form.
To fill the form, you will to know:
- The name and e-mail adress of your supervisor
- The starting and ending date of your internship/thesis
- The provisional title of your project
First download and fill the form. Send it to your supervisor to obtain their signature.
It is highly recommend to fill and sign the form electronically and circulate it by e-mail only. Completing the form by hand may lead to errors on your final transcript.
Download the form for the intra-muros practical training (2 months)
Download the form for the intra-muros thesis (2 semesters)
Once signed, send a copy to conseil-etu-chimie-biochimie(at)unige.ch
This is procedure to register extra-muros UNIGE practical training/thesis, ie. practical training /thesis in a research lab of UNIGE outside of the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, e.g. Faculty of Medicine of UNIGE, CMU, Biology, Pharmacy...
First, contact the research group in which you are interested to do your practical training/thesis.
Once you have discussed the project and obtain an oral agreement, you need to look for an internal supervisor.
The internal supervisor is a Professor or a lecturer from the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry. The role of the internal respondent is the following.
Before the practical training/thesis,
The internal supervisor familiarize themselves with the content of the project (description of the project and, if necessary, discussion with the future supervisor)
By accepting to be internal respondent, the latter acknowledge the academic value of the project.
During the practical training/thesis,
Monitor project and progress at large.
At the end of the practical training/thesis,
Evaluate and grade the internship/thesis.
To fill the form, you will to know:
- The name and e-mail adress of your supervisor
- The name and adress of the welcoming laboratory
- The starting and ending date of your practical training/thesis
- The name and address of your internal supervisor
- The provisional title of your project
Download the form, successively send and obtain the signature of : external supervisor, internal supervisor, head of the department of your internal supervisor.
It is highly recommend to fill and sign the form electronically and circulate it by e-mail only. Completing the form by hand may lead to errors on your final transcript.
Download the extra-muros master practical training form (2 months)
Download the extra-muros master thesis form (2 semesters)
Finally, send it to conseil-etu-chimie-biochimie(at)unige.ch to obtain the validation from the President of the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Confidentiality
During your research project, certain information may be confidential. It is essential to ensure that sufficient details are disclosed to the internal supervisor to allow for proper evaluation and oversight. Specifically, the internal supervisor must be able to:
- Review and approve the project before it begins,
- Monitor its progress throughout its duration,
- Evaluate the final outcomes upon completion.
Please note:
- A final written report must always be submitted to the internal supervisor.
- For Master Theses, an oral defense is mandatory. In cases involving confidential content, the defense may be conducted behind closed doors, with only the internal and external supervisors present.
- Confidentiality must be discussed and agreed upon prior to the start of the project.
- Confidentiality does not exempt students from submitting the final report or completing the oral defense. Failure to meet these requirements will result in the project being marked as failed.
This is procedure to register Extra-muros Academic practical training/thesis, ie. practical training /thesis in an academic research lab not affiliated at UNIGE, e.g. EPFL, EMPA, CNRS, ETHZ,...

By accepting to be internal respondent, the latter acknowledge the academic value of the project.
During the practical training/thesis,
Monitor project and progress at large.
At the end of the practical training/thesis,
Evaluate and grade the internship/thesis.
As the project will be done outside of UNIGE, the preparation of a three-party agreement is mandatory.
Start the process at least 2 months before the intended starting day as it may takes few weeks for signatures to be collected. Never start a project before the agreement has been signed by all parties.
Download the Word template of the three-party agreement, and fill it. Successively send and obtain the signature of : external supervisor, internal supervisor, head of the department of your internal supervisor.
Download the Extra-muros Pratical Training three-party agreement (2 months)
Download the Extra-muros Academic master thesis three-party agreement (2 semesters)
Finally, send it to conseil-etu-chimie-biochimie(at)unige.ch to obtain the validation from the President of the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

This is procedure to register non-academic extra-muros internship/thesis, ie. internship/thesis in a company research lab, e.g. DSM-Firmenich, Merck, Start-ups...
First, contact the company in which you are interested to do your internship/thesis.
Once you have discussed the project and obtain an oral agreement, you need to look for an internal supervisor.
The internal supervisor is a Professor or a lecturer from the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry. The role of the internal respondent is the following.

By accepting to be internal respondent, the latter acknowledge the academic value of the project.
Letter to the President of the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry
The internal supervisor must write a letter addressed to the President of the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry. This letter should explained the academic value of the intended project, ie. the supervision within the company, the technics that are going to be learn, etc.
During the internship/thesis,
Monitor project and progress at large.
At the end of the internship/thesis,
Evaluate and grade the internship/thesis.
As the project will be done outside of UNIGE, the preparation of a three-party agreement is mandatory.

If the company requires a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) in addition to the three-party agreement, it must be prepared before the project starts. Please contact your internal supervisor and the academic advisor at conseil-etu-chimie-biochimie(at)unige.ch. The company is responsible for preparing the NDA. Do not sign any document from the company unless it has been reviewed and approved by the academic advisor.
