Short Biography

Dr Yaniss Guigoz is a specialist in Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), working at the United Nations Environment Science Division/GRID-Geneva as well as in the enviroSPACE and GeoHealth laboratories at the University of Geneva.

He studied Geography at University of Geneva, followed by a Certificate of Specialization in Geomatics. He completed a PhD in Environmental Sciences at University of Geneva in year 2016, for his research on Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI) for addressing environmental challenges.

He has been working for ten years at the World Health Organization as GIS officer, focusing among other on a UN project about administrative boundaries standardisation worldwide (UN SALB). He has also been working in parallel since 2005 at United Nations Environment Science Division/GRID-Geneva as webmaster, GIS officer and Spatial Data Infrastructures specialist, as well as in the enviroSPACE laboratory at University of Geneva. In this frame, he has been involved in several international and regional research projects, such as SCOPES ARPEGEO, FP7 AFROMAISON, FP7 ECOArm2ERA, FP7 IASON, FP7 EOPOWER (as work package leader), ACP ECOWREX, H2020 ECOPOTENTIAL and SCOPES Sustainable Caucasus. He is also part of the GeoHelath laboratory, where he is involved in geographic accessibility analyses of several projects with UNFPA and the Global Fund.

He also participates in GIS and SDI teachings at University of Geneva, such as the Certificate of Geomatics and the Master in Environmental Science (MUSE) and the “Bringing GEOSS Services into Practice” open source course.
