Pierre Maechler
Prof. Pierre Maechler earned his Master’s degree in Biology at the University of Geneva in 1986, where he conducted research under Prof. U.K. Laemmli. He went on to complete his PhD in 1993, studying diabetes-associated metabolic disturbances in experimental models. After nearly a decade as a research scientist at Symphar-ILEX Pharmaceutical Research, he joined the Division of Clinical Biochemistry at Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) in 1995 as a senior scientist.
In 2001, Prof. Maechler was awarded a fellowship from the Dr Max Cloëtta Foundation to lead his own junior research group at the Department of Cell Physiology and Metabolism, Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva. He became Associate Professor in 2006, and Full Professor in 2011.
His research focuses on the role of mitochondria in metabolic signaling and insulin secretion, with a strong emphasis on redox balance and β-cell dysfunction in the context of diabetes. He is also actively involved in teaching biochemistry and metabolism to undergraduate medical and PhD students and contributes to curriculum development in areas including obesity, diabetes, oxidative stress, and sports biochemistry.
Prof. Maechler’s work has contributed significantly to our understanding of β-cell physiology and the cellular mechanisms underpinning diabetes, supported by numerous national and international collaborations.
