Liza obtained her bachelor’s degree in bioinformatics from the Lebanese American University, and in 2017 started her master’s degree in molecular Life Science with a Bioinformatics specialisation at the University of Lausanne.

During her studies, she took an interest in statistical biology and genetics, and thus joined the Statistical Genetics Group during her master thesis work, and continued in the SGG as a PhD candidate under the supervision of Zoltán Kutalik till her graduation in 2023.

Her thesis, titled “Robust Causal Inference Methods to Assess Risk Factors for Common Diseases”, encompassed research into Mendelian Randomization methodology and investigating novel approaches to improve its assumption violations.

Liza joined the CDGG team lead by Prof. Timothy Frayling in 2024, and is currently investigating rare variants of common metabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity and other related conditions using whole genome sequence data, in order to estimate the causes and consequences in the general population.
