Laurent Kaiser: “With viruses, unpredictability is the rule”

Professor Laurent Kaiser is stepping down as head of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the HUG and from the HUG-UNIGE Centre for Emerging Viral Diseases, which he co-founded ten years ago. A pioneering virologist and team-builder, he has lived through four decades of pandemics — from AIDS to COVID-19, by way of SARS, H1N1 and Ebola — often against the prevailing current, yet always convinced of the need to support, develop and pass on.

Andrew Azman joins the Faculty to strengthen infectious disease research

Associate Professor at the Institute of Global Health, Andrew Azman combines field epidemiology with statistical and mathematical modelling. Closely affiliated with the HUG-UNIGE Centre for Emerging Viral Diseases, and co-recipient of the 2026 Leenaards Scientific Prize, his appointment strengthens Geneva's growing infectious disease hub.

Built on a structured assessment drawing on both quantitative and qualitative data, it lays the groundwork for the changes needed to drive a transition grounded in the Faculty's realities and aligned with the University of Geneva's institutional direction.

In 1876, the Faculty of Medicine in Geneva opened its doors. Its history is inextricably linked to that of Geneva itself: born amid the scientific effervescence of the 19th century, it grew alongside the city, embraced its ambitions, and helped forge its position at the heart of the city and in touch with the world.
