Langage et cognition

Research in our team focuses on the representation and processing of grammar. We aim to identify general principles that govern grammatical production, comprehension, and learning in adults, children, and infants, as well as in both native and second-language learners. A key feature of our work is a cross-linguistic approach, comparing the performance of speakers of languages that differ on critical grammatical properties. Our theoretical framework is grounded in cognitive science, integrating constructs from psycholinguistic theories, regarding the cognitive mechanisms underlying grammar use, and constructs from linguistic theory, which describes grammatical structure. Empirically, we rely on experimental methods to assess performance in tasks involving natural and artificial grammars, using traditional behavioral measures (timing and errors) and occasional neural measures (ERPs).
