Next week we are privileged to welcome Prof. B. Defrancq to our FTI-EDV lecture series:

"There’s nothing like first-hand evidence:
Beyond description in corpus-based interpreting studies"

by

Prof. Bart Defrancq, Ghent University

Abstract: In my lecture I will critically review what corpus-based approaches have contributed to interpreting studies in the last 20 years. I will specifically focus on how to go beyond descriptive research and tackle explanatory hypotheses, such as cognitive load and interpreting norms. According to the communis opinio corpus data are unsuited for these types of research. I will try to show that, depending on what has been transcribed and included in the corpus, it is possible to empirically test explanatory hypotheses to a certain extent.
