François Herrmann studied medicine in Geneva, where he obtained a medical degree in 1985 and a doctorate in 1987. From 1988 to 1991, he completed post-doctoral research in medical informatics at Harvard Medical School and obtained a Master's degree in Public Health (MPH) from the same university. He holds a certificate in continuing education in healthcare management from UNIGE and is an staff physician in the Department of Rehabilitation and Geriatrics at HUG, where he is involved in healthcare quality and clinical research. His field of research is geriatric epidemiology (methodology and biostatistics) in relation to cognition, longevity, centenarians, mortality and climate. He became a privat-docent in 2002, then an associate professor in 2013, and was appointed full professor in the Department of Readaptation and Geriatrics in May 2020, where he is the academic director from 2021 to 2025. He is appointed Emeritus Professor in October 2025.
