Susanne Scherrer studied dental medicine at UNIGE. She obtained her degree in 1984 and her doctorate in 1986. With the support of a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) grant for young researchers, she undertook a research residency from 1989 to 1991 at the University of Texas Health Science Centre in San Antonio. Upon her return to Geneva, she continued her academic career with research on fixed prosthetics and biomaterials, while also practising in a private practice. A committed and highly regarded teacher, she developed her research in the field of ceramic materials science and ceramic fracture analysis using fractography. This cutting-edge and pioneering research in dental medicine earned her international recognition as an expert, culminating in the award of the Distinguished Scientist Award from the International Association for Dental Research in 2014. Privat-docent at the UNIGE Faculty of Medicine in 2003, she was appointed associate professor in 2015 and head of the Biomaterials Unit in 2017. Promoted to full professor in 2022, she also served as President of the Dental Medicine Section until July 2025. She is retiring in September 2025.
