Tiziano Cassina completed his medical studies in Lausanne in 1986. He then continued his medical training in the three linguistic regions of Switzerland. After working abroad in humanitarian medicine, he returned to Lausanne in 1991, where he obtained a doctorate and completed his post-graduate training with a double specialisation in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. In 1999, he was appointed Head of Cardiac Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at the Centre for Invasive Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery in Lugano. For 10 years, he maintained a professional link with the Intensive Care Unit at the CHUV in Lausanne. From 2009, he developed a close working relationship with the Department of Anaesthesiology at the HUG, where he became a consultant physician. This activity enabled him to return to the academic world, by being involved in pre-graduate teaching at the UNIGE Faculty of Medicine, and to expand his clinical research with several publications in the field of cardiovascular perioperative medicine. Tiziano Cassina has also been involved in post-graduate training as a member of the Swiss Institute for Medical Education, and is currently vice-president of the Medical Professions Commission (MEBEKO) attached to the Federal Office of Public Health. Appointed adjunct professor in the Department of Anaesthesiology, Pharmacology and Intensive Care (now the Department of Anaesthesiology, Pharmacology, Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine) at the Faculty of Medicine in 2016, he retires from the Academy in September 2025 before ending his current professional activity in Lugano at the beginning of 2026.
