Abstract

The project of this thesis is to address the problems regarding career orientation of visually handicapped people. The evolution of both work organization and new technologies, apart from the functional limitations of a visual handicap, add to the complexity of orientation, education and professional insertion of young people with a vision deficit. A visual handicap reduces the capacity for adaptation, and in a context where flexibility is necessary, one could question the professional perspectives of someone with a visual deficit.

Our theoretical basis about the professional transition will be defined by the adaptability coupled with the theories of autonomy, self-determination theory, the auto-efficacy theories, and the theory of circumscription and compromise. We will describe the processes that make up an initial professional career by taking functional limitations into account and the organization imposed by the AI orientation counselor. We will attempt to evaluate which variables positively influence the process of education and orientation and therefore facilitate the arrival on the job market. In addition to medical experts, young people affected by a visual handicap are also followed by professionals of orientation, education and professional insertion.

The project will follow the paths of young visually impaired people in the French region of Switzerland, from "Secondaire II" until their arrival on the job market (a period of 5years). Semi-directive interviews coupled with different accessible questionnaires will help define decisive phases, obstacles and the impact of individual counseling by the AI. We will compare this data to the results of the SAMS study in order to define career options for this type of handicap, what adaptations are necessary for visually impaired people to pursue their career autonomously, and how they can become adaptable in the current economic context.
